Working Out how much time you will need for your house clearance

Properly planning your time will ensure everything else goes smoothly when clearing your property. A good guide for people completing a house clearance is to allow around ½ day for each room that needs to be cleared.

More is less STRESS

This might seem over the top but with most things in life giving yourself a little extra time to do a job goes a long way.

Decide what you want to keep and what you want to throw away?

The next very important stage of your clearance is to go through all of your possessions and decide what you want to keep, what you want to sell or give away and what you are going to have cleared.

A simple and easy way to do this is for you to label your items in a traffic light system:

Red is to be cleared by The All Clear Company

Orange is items to be sold or donated

Green is things you want to keep

Take your time and take things one step at a time. Go round your home room by room and try and label everything that you see.

Be ruthless - only use the Green labels for items you definitely want to keep.

Once you have labelled everything

Start to move items around the house putting together things which are the same color.

Always start by putting the red label items together first. It doesn't matter if they get damaged when moving them around and you should then be left with a good amount of space to be a little more gentle with the items you would like to keep.

Have a description of what and how much you want to have cleared

Firstly… Well done! That's the hard part done.

Before you call The All Clear Company to take your unwanted items away you will need to have a rough idea of how much stuff you have to be cleared.

An easy way of estimating the amount you have to be taken is to think in terms of a standard size skip that you would see on the side of a road.

What is a standard skip?  6 cubic yards is commonly seen outside on the street.

Do you think you would fill a standard skip? Now you have an idea, take a walk around your property and make a tally of how many skips you think you would fill.

Don’t worry if you feel you may be a little out, you just need a rough idea.

Always take in to consideration items that can be broken down, particularly things like flat pack furniture e.g. wardrobes and cupboards. Anything that can be broken down should be to give you the best value.

Once this is done

Add everything up for a total volume estimate and give us a call:

You now have an idea of the volume estimates for things to keep, items for donation or re-sell and things to be cleared.

Helpful resources

Moving

The British Association of Removers provides useful information on removal companies.

Van hire DIY. If your budget does not allow for a removal company hiring a van can certainly help you save some money. This can be lots of hard work, packing and loading your items carefully. This is a must and will make a big difference in whether your items arrive at your new location in one piece or many pieces.

Re-sale and Donating items

The World Wide Web is a great place to sell unwanted household items - with on-line auction sites like eBay you can sell anything and everything.

Larger and bulkier items are probably best sold via a local auction house or second hand furniture dealer.

Advertise in your local paper or on Gum Tree.

Charity shops are happy to accept most things in working and usable order except electrical appliances and furniture that does not have a current fire-safety certificate.

If you have furniture you would like to donate try the Furniture Reuse Network. It is a UK wide network of social enterprises that aim to maximise furniture reuse.
