EU Landfill Directive - Waste Disposal

Legislation to make waste disposal safer and better for the environment

Back in 1999 the EU Landfill Directive was made law through out the England and Wales.

Some materials are now banned from landfill, which include:

  • Waste Disposal to LandfillLiquid waste
  • Corrosive waste
  • Explosive waste
  • Flammable waste
  • Clinical waste
  • Tyres

Landfill sites are classified as inert, hazardous or non-hazardous and any waste that is destined for landfill can only be sent to an appropriate landfill site.

Since the 30th October 2007 the Regulations also require you to Pre-treat your waste. This asks you to sort waste and encourages you to recover and recycle.

The aim of the Landfill Directive is to prevent negative effects of waste on the environment, avoiding the pollution of surface water, groundwater, soil and air and the bigger global environment picture to reduce the greenhouse effect.
